Relief and Progress: PUCC Centres Triumphantly Resume Operations After 10-Day Strike
Delhi Petrol Dealers to Resume PUCC Operations Following Dialogue with Transport Department
In a significant development following a meeting with officials from the transport department, the Delhi Petrol Dealers’ Association (DPDA) has agreed to resume the operations of Pollution Under Control Certificate (PUCC) centres. These centres had been shut down since July 15 in protest of the proposed hike in PUCC charges, which the association claimed did not align with the operational costs.
The DPDA released a statement confirming their decision to call off the strike and restart the PUCC operations immediately in the interest of the general public in Delhi. The statement noted that the principal secretary of transport has agreed to reconsider the PUCC rate revisions, promising a reassessment based on actual operational costs. The DPDA is set to provide a detailed justification to support this re-evaluation.
The strike began after the Delhi government announced a hike in PUCC charges for petrol, CNG, and diesel vehicles on July 11—a move that occurred for the first time in about 13 years. The increase ranged from ₹20 to ₹40, with the new rates expected to be implemented as soon as they were officially notified, according to Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot.
Delhi hosts over 900 PUCC checking centres, with more than 700 of these situated at petrol stations. The resumption of PUCC operations is anticipated to bring much-needed relief to vehicle owners who have been impacted by the shutdown.
This resolution underscores the importance of dialogue and negotiation between industry stakeholders and government authorities in addressing public service concerns.
