Urgent Warning: US Strongly Advises Against Travel to Manipur – Critical Update for Nationals
US Issues Updated Travel Advisory for India’s Northeastern States: Manipur in Focus
GUWAHATI: The United States has revised its travel advisory for India, urging American citizens to reconsider travel to the country’s northeastern states due to sporadic violence. The advisory places these states under Level 3, indicating "reconsider travel," while Manipur is classified under Level 4, meaning "do not travel."
The updated guidance highlights concerns of terrorism and violence in the northeastern region. Specifically, it warns against travel to Manipur due to significant threats of violence and crime, stemming from ongoing ethnic-based civil conflict. This conflict has led to extensive violence and community displacement, with regular attacks targeting Indian government entities. Consequently, US government employees need prior approval before traveling to Manipur.
The advisory also mentions that ethnic insurgent groups occasionally perpetrate violent acts in parts of the northeast, including bombings involving buses, trains, rail lines, and marketplaces. However, it notes that there have been no recent reports of violence in Assam, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Sikkim, or Tripura.
In addition to Manipur, the advisory specifies that US government employees require prior authorization before traveling to Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, as well as any areas outside the capital cities of Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Tripura.
Overall, India has been placed at Level 2, which advises travelers to exercise increased caution due to the risk of terrorism, conflicts, and crime. Furthermore, Jammu and Kashmir (excluding eastern Ladakh and Leh), parts of central and eastern India, and areas within 10 km of the India-Pakistan border also fall under the Level 4 category.
The advisory underscores the need for heightened vigilance and preparedness for those considering travel to these regions, reflecting ongoing security concerns.
Date of advisory update: July 23, 2023
