Devastation in Arunachal: Pema Khandu Describes Havoc from Intense Floods and Landslides
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Thursday described the damage from heavy rains and landslides during the current monsoon season as “terrible,” surpassing previous years. Addressing the state assembly in response to BJP MLA Pani Taram, Khandu highlighted severe devastation in Kurung Kumey district, with 33 roads and 13 bridges impacted since June 30.
Khandu assured that the Public Works Department (PWD) and Border Roads Organisation (BRO) are working diligently to restore road connectivity, ensuring residents have access to essential supplies. He announced a Rs 17.26 crore allocation for the PWD Sangram Division to lead restoration efforts.
A report from the Kurung Kumey deputy commissioner on July 19 indicated that telecommunication, water, and power supplies have largely been restored. However, significant damage remains to the 11-KV power line near Kurung bridge, impacting the power supply to Parsi Parlo and parts of the Damin circle, which are still awaiting repairs.
Restoration work on the Kurung bridge is underway, with the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHDCL) targeting completion by August 30. Khandu also noted the successful delivery of “first two ration sorties to Damin.”
Personnel from NHDCL and BRO are also working to reestablish surface communication to Sarli and adjacent areas. Emphasizing his administration’s commitment to assisting affected residents, Khandu stated that the state government has directed the Disaster Management Department to conduct a comprehensive damage assessment to allocate special funds as needed.
