Pahlaj Nihalani’s Fiery Response to Govinda’s Astonishing Claim: ‘Uske Dimaag Ka…’ About James Cameron’s Avatar
Former Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chairman and producer Pahlaj Nihalani has dismissed Govinda’s claims regarding the 2009 Hollywood blockbuster Avatar. Back in 2019, Govinda had asserted on the talk show Aap Ki Adalat that he was offered a role in James Cameron’s epic science fiction film and even suggested its title. Nihalani, who produced Govinda’s hits like Shola Aur Shabnam and Aankhen, has contradicted these statements in a recent interview. According to Nihalani, Govinda might have confused Cameron’s film with an unfinished Hindi film titled Avatar that Nihalani had been working on with him.
Nihalani recounted to Friday Talkies that they had shot about 40 minutes of their Avatar before it was shelved. He explained that Govinda had seemingly mixed up their project with the Hollywood movie, causing him to make erroneous claims. Nihalani humorously commented that Govinda’s "disc spun" from Hindi to English, leading to the confusion.
After abandoning their Avatar, Nihalani and Govinda shifted focus to Rangeela Raja, with Nihalani acquiring rights from the 1981 Rajinikanth-starrer Netrikkan. However, their plans were continuously derailed as Govinda reportedly began fainting on set, leading to numerous delays. Nihalani mused that this unexplained fainting episode, allegedly triggered by some almonds, led to Govinda behaving erratically, ultimately hindering the film’s completion.
Rangeela Raja was eventually released in 2019 but fared disastrously at the box office, earning only Rs 18 lakh against a Rs 19 crore budget. Both Nihalani and Govinda have not engaged in any film projects since its release.
