Heartbreaking Tragedy: NIV Confirms First Fatality from Chandipura Virus in Gujarat, Suspected Death Toll Escalates to 14
In Ahmedabad, the Pune-based National Institute of Virology (NIV) has confirmed the first death from Chandipura virus in Gujarat. Out of the five samples sent for confirmation by the state, one belonged to a 5-year-old girl, whose death was verified as being caused by the Chandipura vesiculovirus (CHPV). Dr. Paresh Shiladariya, civil superintendent at Himmatnagar Civil Hospital in Sabarkantha district, revealed that eight suspected cases have been reported in the district, while only one has been confirmed.
A senior health officer in Gandhinagar indicated that across the state, 14 suspected deaths have been reported out of 29 cases, involving individuals from both within Gujarat and neighboring states like Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. “Despite the severity and rising child fatalities, efforts are being made to raise awareness, and a meeting with the health minister is scheduled for Thursday,” the officer stated.
The 15 suspected deaths have occurred across several regions, including Aravalli (3 cases with one confirmed), Sabarkantha (2), Morbi (2), and one each in Mahisagar, Mehsana, Gandhinagar, Panchmahal, Rajkot, Surendranagar, among other districts. In total, 14 districts and cities in Gujarat have reported suspected cases. Additionally, the health bulletin issued by the state government noted that two patients from Udaipur in Rajasthan and Dhar in Madhya Pradesh have also died.
