Chitra Srikrishna’s compelling musical journeys often transcend typical Q&A sessions, bringing unique thematic performances to the fore. Her upcoming event, Pravaas — A Migrant’s Tale, continues this trend, featuring ten songs in ten languages that explore the emotional landscape of migrants. Inspired by the pandemic-induced mass exodus, this performance aims to evoke empathy and understanding through music.

Collaborating with mridanga maestro Phanindra Bhaskara and violinist Vishwajith Mattur, Srikrishna delves deeply into the migrant experience. “Listening to stories of people who relocated due to various circumstances profoundly moved me,” she shares. This sentiment is reflected in her song choices, which span a variety of Indian musical genres and languages, including Kashmiri, Urdu, and Rajasthani. Notable contributions include a tillana by Ashok Subramaniam, highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of her work.

Srikrishna’s rich musical background, shaped by esteemed mentors and enhanced by cross-disciplinary studies, informs her mission to broaden the classical music audience. As an adjunct professor at Ahmedabad University, she explores music’s societal impact, believing in its transformative power.

Pravaas narrates the journey of migrants moving from rural areas to urban settings, with visual aids complementing the music. Highlights include Basavanna’s Kannada vachana, ‘Evanaarava,’ and Tyagaraja’s ‘Maanamu Ledha’ in raga Hamir Kalyani, selected for their emotional resonance. Additionally, Kabir’s ‘Nirbhay Nirgun’ and Bahadur Shah Zafar’s poignant ghazal, ‘Lagta Nahii Hai Dil Mera,’ capture the resilience and despair that define the migrant experience.

Pravaas premieres at the Bangalore International Centre on July 23 at 7 pm; entry is free. This event promises to be a profound exploration of migration through the universal language of music, bridging cultural and emotional gaps.
