Assam Politics Heats Up: Congress Set to Vigorously Contest All 5 Seats in High-Stakes Bypolls, Declares Bhupen Borah
Assam Congress to Contest All Five Assembly Bypoll Seats
GUWAHATI: The Assam Congress has announced its decision to contest all five Assembly seats where upcoming bypolls are set to take place. This decision was finalized during a meeting led by AICC General Secretary Jitendra Singh with district-level party leaders in Guwahati.
Assam Congress President Bhupen Kumar Borah took to social media to affirm the party’s stance. "We would contest all the 5 seats where byelections would be held," Borah posted on his X handle. He also highlighted that five teams of senior leaders would soon be formed to engage with grassroots supporters. While the Election Commission has yet to announce the bypoll dates, preparations are underway.
The five Assembly seats—Samaguri, Behali, Dholai, Sidli, and Bongaigaon—are now vacant following the incumbents’ elections to the Lok Sabha. Among these, only Samaguri was held by Congress, whereas the others were occupied by BJP and its allies AGP and BPF.
Further meetings with Congress MPs, MLAs, and other significant party leaders will be organized to bolster the party’s organizational structure, Borah stated.
Another key development is the activation of the Congress’s Disciplinary Action Committee (DAC) to expedite resolutions of all pending disciplinary cases. Additionally, the party reaffirmed its opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), echoing a commitment made by Rahul Gandhi to repeal the Act upon coming to power.
This resistance to the CAA is underscored by a recent directive from the state government, instructing its Border Police wing not to refer cases of non-Muslim illegal immigrants who entered Assam before 2015 to the Foreigners Tribunal. Instead, these immigrants are advised to apply for citizenship through the CAA.
The Assam Congress appears poised for a combative and strategic engagement in the upcoming bypolls, emphasizing both organizational strength and policy commitments.
