A 34-year-old police constable, Thirunavukarasu, from Perambur police station has been apprehended for the sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl in Mayiladuthurai district. Thirunavukarasu’s familiarity with the victim stemmed from his acquaintance with her father. Utilizing this connection, he established contact with the girl via mobile phone, gradually cultivating a friendship.
On July 8, Thirunavukarasu lured the girl to his quarters, where he made her consume alcohol before sexually assaulting her. The victim disclosed the traumatic incident to her father, prompting him to file a complaint with the Child Helpline (1098).
Acting swiftly, the district Child Welfare Committee facilitated the registration of a case at the Perambur police station, leading to Thirunavukarasu’s arrest. He was subsequently presented in the Special Court under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in Nagapattinam, following which he was remanded to Nagapattinam district jail on Sunday evening.
The case underscores the urgent need for vigilance and stringent action in protecting minors from sexual exploitation, highlighting the role of Child Welfare Committees in ensuring timely intervention and justice.
