Outrage in Assam: Police Complaint Alleges State Minister ‘Illegally’ Administered Harmful Injections to Animals
On Sunday, a police complaint was lodged against Assam Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Minister Atul Bora, accusing him of illegally administering veterinary injections despite lacking a veterinary doctor’s certification.
The complaint, filed by Hirakjyoti Saikia of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti, asserts that Bora is not authorized to administer veterinary treatments, posing potential risks to livestock and constituting a punishable offense.
Despite the complaint, the police have yet to register an FIR, forwarding the matter to the local police station in Golaghat district for further investigation.
Bora had shared photos on July 12 showing him administering injections to a goat and a cow in Bokakhat’s Bongkuwal village, which went viral and sparked criticism online. He defended his actions, stating that the government initiative aimed to provide mobile veterinary services and timely vaccinations, particularly in flood-affected areas, to safeguard livestock health and support farmers.
A senior official from Golaghat Police Station confirmed the receipt of the complaint but noted that the decision to file an FIR lies with the local police station where the incident occurred.
