Two northeastern states, Assam and Tripura, have emerged among the top ten fastest-moving states in NITI Aayog’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) India Index. Additionally, 32 states and union territories, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Tripura, and Mizoram, are listed in the front-runner category.

Last year, Manipur, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh were not in this category but have now made significant strides, reflecting their progress towards meeting various SDG objectives. In particular, Mizoram and Manipur each scored 72, followed by Tripura with 71, and both Arunachal Pradesh and Assam with 65. Meanwhile, Meghalaya and Nagaland each scored 63.

The indexes also highlight that Sikkim’s score increased by 18 points, while Assam and Tripura’s scores grew by 16 points each. Notably, Assam and Mizoram achieved a perfect score of 100 for the “affordable and clean energy” goal, with Manipur scoring 88, and both Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura scoring 74. However, Meghalaya and Nagaland lagged in this area, scoring 62 and 50, respectively.

For the Zero Hunger goal, Mizoram, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh performed commendably, scoring between 65 and 99 to remain in the front-runner category. On the other hand, Tripura, Meghalaya, and Nagaland were categorized as performers, while Assam scored poorly with 47.

In terms of the climate action goal, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland maintained their front-runner status, reflecting their strong performance. However, Tripura, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh were placed in the performer category with scores ranging from 50 to 64.

As these evaluations demonstrate, states in the Northeast like Assam and Tripura are making notable progress in sustainable development, contributing significantly to India’s overall advancement towards the Sustainable Development Goals.
