The Social Perks of Sports Fandom: A Wellbeing Boost for Everyone

Being a sports fan, whether you’re cheering for top-tier football, the Olympic Games, or your local team, is a rollercoaster of emotions. From elation after a win to the dismay following a loss, the experience can be intense. But research suggests it’s all worth it—sports fans generally enjoy greater wellbeing than non-fans, thanks to the social aspects of watching sports.

Wellbeing, referring to one’s psychological state, correlates with better physical health and longer life. A study by Anglia Ruskin University, using data from 7,209 adults in England, found that those attending live sports events were more satisfied with their lives, felt their lives were more meaningful, and faced less loneliness than those who didn’t. Similar studies indicate that in-person spectatorship at least once a year reduces depressive symptoms.

Can’t make it to the stadium? Watching sports on TV or online is also beneficial. Research has shown that television and internet sports viewers are less depressed, particularly those who watch frequently. Higher feelings of life fulfillment are reported among sports viewers, no matter how they watch.

These findings are correlational, but theories like social identity support the link between sports fandom and wellbeing. We find emotional and social support within communities of fellow fans, enhancing our life satisfaction. Identifying with a team creates a shared social identity that strengthens emotional bonds among fans, a phenomenon researchers call "basking in reflected glory." Conversely, distancing from a team after a loss can protect us from negative feelings, a defensive move known as "cutting off reflected failure."

A Japanese study using brain imaging backed up the psychological rewards of popular spectator sports, noting increased brain activity in areas linked to positive feelings.

Whether watching live with friends and family or from home, the community and psychological benefits of sports fandom are clear. The highs and lows of supporting your team are ultimately good for you, especially when shared with others.
