The Ultimate Betrayal: Jairam Ramesh Condemns Constitution Murder Day
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh Criticizes PM Modi over "Constitution Murder Day" Announcement
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh launched a scathing critique of Prime Minister Narendra Modi following the Government of India’s decision to declare June 25 as "Constitution Murder Day." This day marks the anniversary of the Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi’s government in 1975, a highly debated chapter in Indian political history.
In a series of tweets, Ramesh labeled Modi as "non-biological" and accused him of hypocrisy regarding the Emergency declaration. He asserted that Modi had imposed an "undeclared Emergency" during his tenure, only to face a significant electoral defeat on June 4, 2024.
Ramesh’s sharp words continued as he tweeted, "This is a non-biological PM who has subjected the Constitution of India and its principles, values, and institutions to systematic assault.” He condemned Modi’s government for allegedly undermining democratic norms and constitutional values.
Further, Ramesh criticized Modi’s ideological roots, implying they historically rejected the Indian Constitution’s principles. "This is a non-biological PM whose ideological parivar had rejected the Constitution of India in Nov 1949 on the grounds that it did not derive inspiration from Manusmriti," he tweeted, accusing Modi’s worldview of reducing democracy to mere power pursuit.
The declaration by Union Home Minister Amit Shah has sparked significant controversy. Shah’s statement depicted June 25, 1975, as a day when democracy was stifled by Emergency’s imposition, featuring widespread arrests and media suppression. The government intends to honor those who resisted the authoritarian measures of that era by observing this day annually.
In response, leaders from various opposition parties critiqued the BJP for trying to divert attention from contemporary issues. Trinamool Congress’s Kunal Ghosh suggested that the declaration was an attempt to shift focus from the BJP’s current policy failures. AAP leader Priyanka Kakkar accused the BJP of ongoing constitutional assaults since 2014. She pointed to policies like electoral bonds as examples of democratic erosion.
This declaration and the fiery reactions affirm the enduring contentiousness surrounding the Emergency period in Indian politics.
