Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Thursday addressed the growing issue of unemployment in India, describing it as an epidemic. His remarks were prompted by a chaotic scene in Ankleshwar, Gujarat, where approximately 800 candidates turned up for walk-in interviews for just 40 vacancies at a firm. The ensuing stampede-like situation, captured in viral social media videos, highlighted the desperation among job seekers.
Rahul Gandhi targeted BJP-ruled states, calling them the epicenter of this unemployment crisis. He asserted that the mass turnout for limited job opportunities was a stark representation of the “reality of Narendra Modi’s ‘Amrit Kaal.'” Gandhi emphasized that unemployment is now a pressing issue as young hopefuls vie for limited positions.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also weighed in, criticizing the BJP for what he termed as a “cheating model” in governance over the past 22 years in Gujarat. Kharge stated that the desperation among job seekers is tangible proof of how the Modi government has failed the youth by not fulfilling its promise of creating two crore jobs annually. He pointed to issues like paper leaks, recruitment corruption, education mafia, and the failure to fill reserved posts as evidence of systemic flaws in the BJP’s employment policies.
Adding to the criticism, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh called out the so-called “Modi model,” suggesting that it only benefits the rich. Ramesh highlighted that despite three decades of BJP rule in Gujarat, the state still grapples with high unemployment rates.
The incident in Ankleshwar underscored the acute problem of job scarcity in the country. The videos showing crowds struggling to secure a position illustrated the larger ailment plaguing India’s youth—a lack of adequate employment opportunities.
