Rahul Gandhi Vows to Powerfully Champion Manipur’s Plight in Parliament: Congress’ INDIA Bloc Stands United
Rahul Gandhi Urges Parliamentary Action for Peace in Manipur
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, announced on Thursday that the Congress and the INDIA bloc will vigorously demand peace in Manipur during the Parliament session, aiming to exert pressure on the government to resolve the ongoing crisis. This statement came days after Gandhi’s visit to the violence-stricken state.
Gandhi reiterated his call for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Manipur personally, engage with the residents, and advocate for peace. Posting in Hindi on X, Gandhi shared a video of his recent interactions with locals during his day-long visit. He expressed concern over the lack of improvement in the situation, noting that the state remains deeply divided, with homes burning and thousands living in relief camps.
Since ethnic violence erupted on May 3 last year, Gandhi has visited Manipur three times. During his latest visit, he toured three relief camps and spoke with people from the conflicting Meitei and Kuki communities. In his video, Gandhi is seen listening to the fears and problems of the displaced individuals, assuring them that the Congress party and its MPs have already raised their issues in Parliament and will continue to do so.
"I can help you by raising the issue and putting pressure on the government, but I can’t promise when you’ll return to your homes, as only the government can answer that," Gandhi told those in a relief camp.
The ethnic violence in Manipur since May last year has resulted in approximately 200 deaths and thousands being displaced, with homes and government buildings destroyed. The Congress leader’s ongoing efforts highlight the pressing need for peace and the urgency for governmental intervention to end the tragedy.
