Heart-Wrenching Survival: Refugee Mother Nganthoibi’s Inspiring Fight for Normalcy Amid Manipur Violence
Nganthoibi cradles her daughter, Yaihenbi, in a cramped relief camp room that once served as a college staff room, contrasting starkly with the meaning of her daughter’s name, “more than a jewel.” A native of Imphal, Nganthoibi relocated to Churachandpur after her marriage in February 2022. However, by May 2023, communal violence forced her and her family to flee, rendering them refugees in their homeland.
Their home was destroyed, possessions looted, and they escaped to an overcrowded relief camp in Imphal with nothing but the clothes on their backs. This makeshift home, formerly an educational institution, now shelters approximately 800 individuals. Shared rooms, inadequate facilities, and flooding during rains underscore the camp’s harsh conditions.
In July 2023, Nganthoibi and her husband started a small tea stand in the camp to provide for their daughter, Yaihenbi, now 18 months old. The modest business selling tea and samosas has grown, enabling them to occasionally afford better food and vital clothing. Despite their efforts, the camp provides only two meals daily, and proper nutrition remains a challenge.
The slow governmental response exacerbates their struggles. Nganthoibi expresses frustration over unfulfilled promises of temporary housing, echoing the sentiments of many displaced residents. Newly elected MP Bimol Akoijam highlighted the crisis, questioning the efficiency of the armed forces in preventing widespread homelessness.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi insists progress is underway, citing arrests and a reduction in violence. However, opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, during his visit on July 8, stressed the ongoing suffering and urged the Prime Minister to witness the situation firsthand.
Despite political reassurances, daily survival in the camp remains a stark reality. Nganthoibi’s unwavering plea for normalcy underscores the urgent need for effective solutions. Her resilience, symbolized by the ongoing operation of her tea stand, reflects the indomitable spirit of displaced families who yearn to reclaim their lives.
