Victorious Scientific Expedition Triumphantly Conquers East Rathong Glacier
Scientific Expedition to East Rathong Glacier Completed Successfully
GANGTOK: The State Science & Technology Department has successfully concluded a two-week scientific expedition to the East Rathong Glacier. Conducted from June 22 to July 4, this expedition is part of the department’s extensive study on glacier dynamics and the assessment of potential glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) risks.
The expedition team, consisting of scientists and researchers, was divided into two groups at Dzongri. The first team, led by Dr. Narpati Sharma, focused on a bathymetric study at Tikip La, Bhaley Pokhari, and Rathong Lake using an unmanned survey vehicle (USV). The second team, under the guidance of Dr. R.K. Sharma, delved into the dynamics of the East Rathong Glacier. This included installing stakes to monitor glacier velocity and vertical retreat, studying glacio-hydrology of meltwater streams, and conducting a DGPS survey. Additionally, the team maintained and upgraded an automatic weather station at Rathong Glacier.
The department’s press release unveiled significant findings from the glacial lake surveys. Tikip La was discovered to have a maximum depth of 55 meters and lacks a defined open outlet, though its water does move downstream in the valley. In contrast, Bhaley Pokhari and Rathong Lake have maximum depths of 42 meters and 25.4 meters, respectively, with well-defined outlets. Currently, a volume assessment of these lakes is underway.
The collected data is crucial for devising strategies to mitigate potential GLOF risks and for using science and technology to foster sustainable development in the state. The findings will significantly contribute to understanding glacier behavior and implementing preventive measures against possible natural disasters.
This expedition underscores the importance of scientific research in addressing environmental challenges and ensuring the safety and sustainability of vulnerable regions.
