Triumphant Welcome: Russia’s Bold Message to China During PM Modi’s Grand Reception at Moscow Airport

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi commenced a pivotal two-day visit to Moscow on Monday, underscoring the significance of Indo-Russian relations amidst a changing global landscape. Upon arrival, Modi was received by Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, a notably higher-ranking official than the Deputy Prime Minister who welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping during his recent visit to Russia. Manturov’s presence at the airport and his personal accompaniment of Modi to the hotel highlight the elevated importance Russia places on its relationship with India.

This commendable reception stands in stark contrast to the one accorded to Xi Jinping and underlines the high regard Moscow holds for New Delhi. India’s relationship with Russia dates back to the Cold War era, with Russia once being India’s largest arms supplier. However, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine has strained Russia’s military capacity, leading to a reduction in arms exports to India in recent years.

Interestingly, this decline in military exchanges has been paralleled by a burgeoning energy partnership. India has become a major purchaser of discounted Russian oil, securing substantial savings and providing Russia with critical revenue amidst Western sanctions. This economic pivot has significantly reshaped bilateral ties, contributing to Moscow’s financial stability while bolstering India’s energy security.

PM Modi’s current visit, his first since 2019, reflects India’s strategic maneuvering to maintain its historic ties with Russia while building stronger security partnerships with Western countries. As geopolitical dynamics evolve, the high-level reception extended to Modi reaffirms India’s continuing relevance as a key partner for Russia.

Amidst the backdrop of fluctuating global alliances, Modi’s Moscow visit reinforces the strategic importance of Indo-Russian relations, emphasizing New Delhi’s adeptness in balancing its traditional alliances with emerging global realities.
