Historic Alliance: India’s PM Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin Forge Unbreakable Bonds in Moscow
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Monday, marking his first visit to the Kremlin since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This meeting holds particular significance as it comes on the heels of Modi’s reelection for a rare third term. The leaders are expected to discuss the enhancement of traditionally friendly relations and address key international and regional issues, as stated by the Kremlin.
The agenda includes a comprehensive review of bilateral matters such as defense, trade, investment, and energy cooperation, according to India’s Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra. Additionally, both countries will assess their participation in multilateral organizations like the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, BRICS, the Group of 20, the United Nations, and the East Asia Summit. An important topic for discussion is the status of Indian nationals allegedly misled into joining the Russian army, a situation India has been addressing since uncovering what it terms a significant human trafficking network.
Russia has faced severe sanctions from the Group of 7 nations and other countries since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Moscow, however, refers to this action as a “special military operation.” India has maintained a neutral stance, opting not to criticize Russia directly but condemning civilian casualties early in the conflict.
India and Russia’s deep-rooted security cooperation dates back to the Cold War, with New Delhi heavily reliant on Moscow for military supplies. Trade relations between the two nations have seen significant growth, with bilateral trade reaching a record $65.7 billion in the financial year ending March 2024, though the trade remains imbalanced.
Following his Moscow visit, Modi will travel to Vienna, Austria, marking the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Austria in 41 years. This European leg of Modi’s trip underscores the broader geopolitical engagements and strategic partnerships India aims to foster globally.
