President Biden’s campaign is set to unveil a new advertisement on Monday targeting former President Donald J. Trump’s stance on abortion. The ad, part of a $50 million July ad campaign, will be broadcast on digital TV in key battleground states. It argues that Trump is largely responsible for the 2022 Supreme Court decision that ended the constitutional right to an abortion. The advertisement, titled “Her Own,” highlights Trump’s pride in appointing anti-abortion justices who overturned Roe v. Wade.
The ad contrasts Trump’s record with Biden’s commitment to restoring Roe v. Wade, urging voters to consider who they want in the White House. Trump has previously expressed that he prefers states to decide on abortion rather than a nationwide ban, but Biden’s campaign warns that Trump’s potential second term could see more restrictive measures, including nationwide abortion bans.
The ad aims to counteract Biden’s previous debate performance, where he faltered on the abortion issue. Since then, Biden has reinforced his promise to protect abortion rights. The campaign has also spotlighted Project 2025, a conservative plan drafted by the Heritage Foundation, which Biden’s team claims would drastically limit personal freedoms if Trump wins the presidency.
Lauren Hitt, a spokeswoman for Biden’s campaign, stated that Trump’s re-election could lead to severe restrictions on reproductive health care, emphasizing that Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris stand as a barrier against such measures. Despite Trump’s claim of no involvement with Project 2025, it is supported by several of his close allies. The Biden campaign’s focused strategy seeks to underscore the stakes of the 2024 presidential election, particularly on abortion issues.
