CM, DCM Offer Prayers for Dalai Lama’s Long Life on 89th Birthday
DHARAMSHALA/TAWANG, 6 Jul: Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama celebrated his 89th birthday on Saturday, conveying to his followers that he is in good health but experiences mild leg discomfort due to age. Currently in the US recovering from knee-replacement surgery, the Dalai Lama reassured supporters of his continued dedication to Lord Buddha’s teachings.
The Dalai Lama thanked Tibetans globally for their birthday prayers, expressing gratitude and emphasizing his intention to persist in spreading Buddha’s message. Celebrations took place at McLeodGanj with notable attendees including Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, Arunachal Pradesh MP Tapir Gao, and other dignitaries. The Tibetan government in exile wished the Dalai Lama a long life, hoping for the reunion of Tibetans.
In Tawang, Chief Minister Pema Khandu participated in the 89th birthday celebrations at Galden Namgey Lhatse monastery, India’s largest and Asia’s second-largest Buddhist monastery. Khandu joined in prayers for the Dalai Lama’s health and guidance, and also planted tree saplings at Urgelling, the birthplace of the sixth Dalai Lama. He called for global compassion, empathy, and kindness.
Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein participated in the celebrations at Lhagon Jangchup Choeling monastery in Tezu’s Dhargyeling Tibetan settlement camp. Mein praised the Tibetan community’s cultural preservation efforts and assured governmental support. He received a shield and a certificate of appreciation from the Tibetan settlement office.
The events featured traditional Tibetan dances and were attended by Ven Dzogchen Ganor Rinpoche, several ministers, and other dignitaries. Prayer ceremonies were integral to the celebrations, reinforcing the Dalai Lama’s message of peace, compassion, and harmony. (PTI with input from DCM’s PR Cell)
