Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is expected to visit Manipur on July 8, party sources revealed. During his visit, Gandhi plans to tour relief camps and engage with Manipur Congress leaders.

According to sources, Gandhi’s itinerary includes visits to Moirang and Churachandpur, where he will interact with internally displaced persons residing in relief camps. This forms part of his ongoing efforts to address the distress in these conflict-stricken regions.

Earlier this year, Gandhi initiated the Congress party’s mass outreach programme, Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, from Thoubal in Manipur. The campaign covered over 6,700 kilometers, spanning 15 states from Manipur to Mumbai in an effort to unify various regions and communities.

At a previous rally in Manipur, Gandhi sharply criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the ethnic clashes that have plagued the state since May 2023. The violence between the Kuki and Meitei communities has resulted in over 220 fatalities. Gandhi accused the BJP and its affiliates, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the RSS, of propagating what he termed as ‘politics of hatred’ which led to significant unrest and loss in the state.

“Manipur is an embodiment of BJP’s divisive politics,” said Gandhi. “For Narendra Modi, BJP, and RSS, it appears the state is not a part of India.” He lamented the Prime Minister’s absence during the crisis, stating, “Till now, the Prime Minister has not come here to console the victims. It is a shameful act.”

Following his visit to Manipur, Gandhi might head to Nagaland on the same day, furthering his engagement with the northeastern states.

This article follows emerging reports of Gandhi’s likely movement in the region, amid ongoing scrutiny and criticism of the central government’s handling of the conflict in Manipur.
