Heartwarming Rescue: Helpless 2-Year-Old Rhino Calf Saved from Assam’s Kaziranga Flood
Rescued Rhino Calf Receiving Intensive Care at Kaziranga Rehabilitation Center
GUWAHATI: On Wednesday evening, a 2-year-old female rhino calf was found stranded amidst the floodwaters in Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve in Assam. The calf, separated from its mother, was struggling to stay afloat when it was spotted in the park’s Kohora range.
A swift rescue operation was carried out by the Assam Forest Frontline team alongside a Mobile Veterinary Service (MVS) unit from the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC). The CWRC is managed by the Assam forest department in collaboration with the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI).
The calf was promptly transported to the CWRC facility, where it is now under around-the-clock observation. A dedicated team of veterinarians and animal keepers is ensuring its wellbeing. The calf remains active and alert as it receives necessary care in the Large Animal Nursery.
Dr. Sonali Ghosh, Field Director of Kaziranga National Park, emphasized the critical condition of the calf upon its rescue, highlighting the immediate intervention required to stabilize the young rhino. “Forest police teams ensured a safe rescue and transfer to CWRC for further care,” she stated.
Rathin Barman, Joint Director of the Wildlife Trust of India, corroborated the calf’s ongoing rehabilitation. “The calf is currently active and alert. It is under 24×7 surveillance and receiving essential care,” Barman noted. He added that the CWRC team is fully equipped to offer top-tier care for animals rescued from flood conditions, aiming to facilitate their return to the wild.
This rescue and ongoing care are part of the broader efforts to protect and rehabilitate wildlife in the flood-prone regions of Assam, particularly during the monsoon season when incidents of animals being stranded are frequent. The collaborative efforts between the Assam forest department and the WTI continue to play a pivotal role in wildlife conservation in the region.
In addition to this incident, public and forest department officials encourage increased community vigilance and rapid reporting of stranded animals to aid timely interventions and reduce wildlife casualties during adverse weather conditions.
