Devastating Floods and Landslides Ravage Arunachal Pradesh: Over 60,000 Lives Uprooted
Several parts of Arunachal Pradesh are grappling with severe floods and landslides as major rivers have surged above danger levels. Four districts—Namsai, Lohit, Changlang, and East Siang—have been severely impacted by flooding, while other districts are experiencing landslides triggered by continuous rainfall, officials reported.
A cloudburst in the Sagalee region of Papum Pare district led to the release of a significant water volume from the Pare Hydropower Project (PHEP), according to PTI. Assistant General Manager (Technical) of PHEP, Taba Gagung Tebw, urged downstream residents to remain vigilant and avoid riverbanks for fishing. The district administration has also advised the public to stay away from water bodies.
In Changlang’s Bordumsa area, Bijoypur, Makantong, and Wagun-III and -IV have been inundated as the Burha Dehing river swelled, damaging bridges, culverts, crops, and livestock. Officials have issued a high flood alert for Namsai and Wakro circle in Lohit, where water levels have breached danger marks.
According to the state water resources department, 34 villages in Namsai and Wakro have been affected. Additionally, five villages in Lohit, 11 in Itanagar, 16 in Changlang, and four in West Kameng are also hit, based on official reports.
So far, 61,948 people have been impacted by the rains and consequent floods and landslides. Approximately 300 individuals have been evacuated to relief camps in Itanagar, Changlang, and Namsai districts. Officials noted that 143.58 hectares of agricultural and horticultural land have been affected.
Moreover, a major water supply line feeding Itanagar township has been disrupted between Zoo Road and Ganga Lake due to landslides, affecting water supply to areas including C-sector, ESS, and Gandhi Market. Efforts to restore the line are underway, with officials estimating a week’s time for complete restoration.
The state is working diligently to manage the crisis, but the situation remains precarious as rains continue.
