Gaurav Gogoi Criticizes PM Modi for Inaction on Manipur Ethnic Conflict
At the India Today Mumbai Conclave 2024, Assam Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi delivered a pointed critique of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s handling of the ethnic conflict in Manipur. Gogoi lambasted Modi for prioritizing international peace efforts, such as mediating between Russia and Ukraine, while neglecting significant domestic issues, particularly the longstanding violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur.
"For 17 months, Manipur has been gripped by ethnic violence, with over 240 people killed and thousands displaced," Gogoi stated. "Despite flying across the world to negotiate peace abroad, the Prime Minister has not taken a flight to Manipur to address this crisis at home."
The ongoing conflict has escalated to such an extent that it has ushered in an era marked by hatred and fear, driving a wedge between the Meitei and Kuki communities. The societal rift is so profound that students from both groups are unable to coexist in the same educational institutions.
Gogoi called on Modi to adopt a more direct and compassionate approach, emphasizing the necessity for the Prime Minister’s "healing touch" to facilitate peace and reconciliation. "The people of the northeast would thank him if he steps in to bridge the divide and bring long-term peace to the region," he concluded.
