Urgent UN Security Council Meeting on Lebanon Crisis Amid Explosive Israel-Hezbollah Conflict | MorungExpress
The United Nations Security Council, at France’s request, held an emergency session on Lebanon’s worsening crisis—its second meeting in under a week. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the situation as “hell breaking loose” and called on the Council to urgently address the escalating violence between Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants across the Blue Line, a buffer zone in southern Lebanon.
Guterres emphasized the need for both parties to de-escalate to avoid a catastrophic regional war, highlighting widespread civilian displacement and severe attacks on Israeli targets by Hezbollah. He urged respect for Lebanese sovereignty and reinforced the importance of empowering the Lebanese Armed Forces.
Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Badr Ahmed Mohamed Abdelatty, warned that the violence could spread regionally if the international community fails to intervene, citing parallels with Gaza’s ongoing conflict. Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi criticized the international community and the UN Security Council for failing to hold Israel accountable for alleged war crimes, exacerbating the conflict.
France proposed a 21-day ceasefire to facilitate negotiations, supported by the United States, as the death toll from Israeli strikes rises. The Arab League warned of potential large-scale regional war resulting from the “Israeli aggression.”
On Wednesday, Israel indicated readiness for a ground incursion into Lebanon, mobilizing reservists and preparing for potential operations in enemy territory, according to Israel’s Military Chief Herzi Halevi. On the same day, Israeli warplanes conducted around 70 airstrikes in eastern and southern Lebanon, following the heaviest attacks since 2006.
With over 550 deaths and 1,800 injuries reported, Lebanese Environment Minister Nasser Yassin noted that Israeli bombardment has displaced more than 150,000 residents. The rapid escalation fuels fears of a full-scale conflict, potentially involving other regional powers.
