City Reports Rare Chikungunya Manifestations; Health Dept Intensifies Surveillance
Pune: Private hospitals in the city have reported unusual manifestations among Chikungunya virus-infected patients, including encephalitis, meningoencephalitis, myocarditis, gastroenteritis, kidney injury, sepsis, and Guillain-Barré syndrome. In response, the public health department has instructed all local bodies across the state to ramp up Chikungunya disease surveillance, entomological surveys, and containment activities.
Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne viral infection. Health officials urge the public not to panic but to take necessary precautions. Dr. Radhakishan Pawar, Joint Director of Health Services, emphasized that these symptoms can also occur in co-infection cases with diseases like Dengue, Zika, and Japanese encephalitis.
Dr. Rajesh Dighe, Assistant Health Officer of the Pune Municipal Corporation, stated that the city has heightened its surveillance and containment efforts. "We are gathering detailed reports of Chikungunya-positive patients with rare symptoms from city hospitals and have asked private doctors to share data of infected patients from this year," he said.
Experts from the National Institute of Virology (NIV) confirmed that the current Chikungunya virus circulating in Pune belongs to the Indian Ocean lineage of the East-Central-South African (ECSA) genotype. Between July and September 15, out of 3,208 tested samples from Pune district, 1,004 have been confirmed positive for the virus.
