Shocking Arrest: Beloved Assam RTI Activist Dulal Bora Nabbed in Delhi on Explosive Extortion Charges
Delhi Police apprehended RTI activist Dulal Bora on the morning of September 25. According to reports, Bora had been evading authorities and was found in a private hospital in the capital city under the pretense of illness. He is now held at Kirti Nagar Police Station for further legal proceedings.
Bora’s arrest is linked to allegations of his abuse of the Right to Information (RTI) Act for personal financial gain. His notoriety began with an RTI inquiry into a government scheme in Rajapukhuri panchayat, where he accused irregularities in the construction of a local temple. Despite receiving official responses, Bora continued to target Devojit Hazarika, the panchayat representative, through persistent harassment.
Additionally, three other people connected to the scheme have also been arrested. Investigatory sources suggest Bora fled Assam for Delhi, where his daughter studies, indicating a possible attempt to escape legal repercussions.
Bora’s scheme entailed systematically exploiting the RTI framework. By placing intermediaries within various government departments, he collected sensitive information about officials and projects. Utilizing this data, he filed complaints with substantial allegations for leverage purposes.
A core tactic of Bora’s operation was extortion. Through a network of conduits, he would demand money from implicated officials in exchange for retracting his complaints. When payments were made or assurances given, the complaints were swiftly withdrawn.
This unfolding case illuminates a broader misuse of the RTI Act, highlighting the need for vigilance and reform to protect the integrity of governmental transparency initiatives.
