Supreme Court Demands Urgent CAQM Report on Farm Fire Prevention: Holding Officials Accountable for Inaction
The Supreme Court has requested a detailed report from the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on the measures implemented to prevent farm fires and the actions taken against officials who have allowed these incidents to persist despite previous directives.
This directive came from a bench consisting of Justices AS Oka and Augustine George Masih, who scheduled the matter for further deliberation on Friday. Senior advocate Aparajita Singh, acting as amicus curiae in the ongoing case concerning air pollution in Delhi, urgently brought the issue to the court’s attention. As a result, the bench expressed interest in reviewing the CAQM’s response on the matter of stubble burning, particularly given the impending hearing for a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by environmental activist M C Mehta regarding air pollution in the Delhi-NCR region.
Advocate Singh highlighted reports indicating that stubble burning has commenced in states neighboring Delhi, urging the court to demand an explanation from the CAQM to address these concerns. The court’s focus on this matter underscores the ongoing challenges in mitigating air pollution in the capital and surrounding areas, emphasizing the need for stringent enforcement of existing measures to curb farm fires.
