Crucial Diplomatic Breakthrough: EAM Jaishankar’s Pivotal Meeting with Bangladesh FA Advisor in New York Amid Frosty Ties
New Delhi, Sep 24: External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar met with Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Advisor Touhid Hossain on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday. This marks the first high-level engagement between India and Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, following Sheikh Hasina’s ouster as Prime Minister last month. The meeting emphasized "strengthening" bilateral ties and addressing mutual interests.
EAM Jaishankar shared on X about the meeting that focused on the bilateral relationship. This diplomatic interaction occurred just hours after Bangladesh lodged a formal protest with India’s High Commission in Dhaka over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks concerning Bangladeshi nationals during his visit to Jharkhand. The protest was met with criticism, and it is anticipated that EAM Jaishankar conveyed India’s displeasure over the issue during his discussion with Hossain.
Despite India advocating for the normalization of relations after recent tumultuous events and continued targeting of the Hindu community in Bangladesh, there have been accusations against Dhaka’s interim government for making unfounded statements. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) previously dismissed allegations from Bangladesh that India is deliberately increasing water flow into the neighboring country as "baseless."
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified that the opening of Farakka barrage gates, allowing over 11 lakh cusecs of water to flow into the Ganga/Padma river, is a routine seasonal occurrence due to heavy rainfall. Jaiswal emphasized that any misinformation or fear-mongering is countered with factual data regularly shared with Bangladeshi officials.
There was also media speculation about a potential meeting between PM Modi and Mohammad Yunus at the UN ‘Summit of the Future,’ which did not occur due to differing schedules. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed that the timing didn’t allow for such a meeting as the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh hadn’t arrived yet.
