Transformational STEM Workshop Ignites Passion in Shillong: Hosted by NECTAR and IISER Pune
STEM Workshop for Teachers: Mobilising Science and Technology-Based Learning in Meghalaya
In a bid to address the educational challenges in Meghalaya and promote innovative learning solutions, the North East Centre for Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR) organized a pioneering one-day workshop for teachers focused on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education. Conducted in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune, and the Smart Village Movement, Meghalaya, the workshop was hosted at St. Edmund’s College, Shillong.
Aimed at revitalizing STEM education across the state, the workshop saw the participation of 100 teachers from various schools in Shillong and nearby areas. This initiative forms part of a broader strategy to establish a STEM Hub on the NECTAR campus, envisioned as a collaborative space for students, teachers, and researchers to innovate and share knowledge.
The distinguished lineup of attendees included Shri Swapnil Tembe, IAS, Additional Secretary of the Education Department & Director of School Education & Literacy, and State Project Director of Samagra Shiksha Abhiyaan, Meghalaya. Also present were Dr. Collin Z. Renthiei, Technical Advisor at NECTAR, and Dr. Chaitanya Mungi, Project Coordinator of STEM Ready at IISER Pune, along with other notable officials and experts from NECTAR, IISER, and SVM.
This workshop highlighted the potential of modern pedagogical techniques in STEM teaching, emphasizing inquiry-based learning to stoke curiosity and creativity among students. Its primary objectives were to bridge the urban-rural education divide by providing rural schoolteachers with access to high-quality STEM resources and to encourage collaboration and the sharing of best practices among educators. Participants were introduced to fundamental STEM tinkering concepts, including hands-on mathematics, prototyping interactive science projects, simulations, and app-based experiments.
The workshop concluded on a high note with the distribution of certificates to all participants, symbolizing their readiness to implement these advanced teaching techniques in their respective schools.
