Triumphant Victory: Union Minister Sonowal Unopposed as President of Assam Olympic Association
Guwahati, Sept. 23: Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, has been re-elected as President of the Assam Olympic Association (AOA) in unopposed elections held at DDSA Stadium in Dibrugarh. The vote also appointed several key figures within the AOA, including the Senior Vice President, Vice President, General Secretary, Treasurer, Joint Secretary, Assistant General Secretary, and members of the Executive Council.
Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma lauded Sonowal and the newly elected officials on social media, expressing optimism about their ability to elevate the state’s sporting prospects. "Many congratulations to Shri @sarbanandsonwal dangoriya for being elected as the President of the Assam Olympic Association and to all the new office bearers. I am confident that under his leadership, the team will work towards enhancing sporting opportunities in the State," Sarma posted.
Notably, 13 BJP MLAs abstained from voting, and multiple BJP ministers and legislators withdrew nominations for senior positions, purportedly following directives from Chief Minister Sarma. Pijush Hazarika, Assam’s Information and Public Relations Minister, indicated that this move was designed to create a healthier sporting environment free from political interference.
The AOA’s Executive Council is composed of 45 members, including the President, General Secretary, and Treasurer. The council also includes positions for two Senior Vice Presidents, ten Vice Presidents, six Joint Secretaries, eight Assistant Secretaries, and sixteen Executive Council members. Additionally, two representatives for athletics are also part of the council.
With a refreshed leadership, the Assam Olympic Association is poised to advance its mission of promoting sports in Assam under Sonowal’s guidance.
