Police Triumph: 15 Suspects, Including 3 Women, Captured in Statewide Crackdown – Justice Served
Guwahati, Sept 22: In a significant crackdown, Assam Police, with the support of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), arrested 15 individuals, including three women, linked to a bomb-planting scheme orchestrated by the proscribed United Liberation Front of Asom – Independent (ULFA-I). The operation, which took place on Saturday, was the result of extensive intelligence efforts and led to coordinated raids across multiple districts.
The sweep saw apprehensions from various locations: one suspect each in Tinsukia, Sadiya, Nagaon, Nalbari, and Tamulpur; two in Jorhat and Guwahati; and three each in Dibrugarh and Lakhimpur. Initial interrogations have revealed incriminating information, with authorities expecting further details about the conspiracy to emerge through continued questioning.
This wave of arrests builds on recent actions, including the detention of two suspects by the Guwahati Crime Branch earlier this month in the Azara area. Furthermore, Jorhat police had previously arrested Manab Kalita from Titabor, who had confessed to planting bombs at four locations in Guwahati on Independence Day.
Notably, ULFA-I had claimed responsibility for planting bombs at over 20 locations across Assam on August 15, including eight spots in Guwahati. The swift response by law enforcement resulted in the recovery of improvised explosive devices (IEDs)-like materials from four city locations—Gandhi Basti, Panbazar, Narengi, and Lastgate—as well as in Sivasagar, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, and Nagaon districts.
In light of these threats, the Director General of Police (DGP) established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to delve deeper into the bombings and announced a reward of ₹5 lakh for information leading to further arrests.
