Empowered by Gandhian Values: Sikkim MP Champions ‘Swachhata Hi Sewa’ Campaign with Passion and Purpose
In a commendable demonstration of community spirit and dedication to cleanliness, the “Swachhata Hi Sewa” campaign was launched in Mangshila. This event was a collaborative effort by the Gram Panchayats of Mangshila-Tibuk, Namok-Swayem, and Tingchim-Chanday, along with the Zilla Territorial constituencies of Mangshila-Tibuk and Tingchim-Chanday. The campaign drew a significant crowd, featuring notable leaders including Hon’ble Zilla Adhakshya Kado Lepcha, Former Chairperson Chungkipu Lepcha, and Zilla Panchayat members Smt. Amrita Subba and Moti Maya Subba, among others.
The event’s chief guest, Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba, delivered an inspiring address echoing the principles of Mahatma Gandhi. He stressed that cleanliness is a shared responsibility and should become a “jan andolan” (people’s movement), in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a Swachh Bharat. MP Subba celebrated Sikkim’s achievement in maintaining its Open Defecation Free (ODF) Plus status and urged the community to continue this momentum.
“Swachhata is not just about cleaning our surroundings; it represents a mindset of dignity, discipline, and collective responsibility,” Subba remarked. He emphasized the importance of innovative and sustainable waste management practices to address the growing issue of solid waste, highlighting that traditional landfills are not sustainable solutions.
The campaign underscored a strong message of unity and collective action, urging attendees to internalize Gandhiji’s teachings on cleanliness. MP Subba reiterated that Sikkim’s path to a cleaner future depends on the dedicated efforts of each individual.
This event followed the recent statewide launch of the Swachhata Hi Sewa campaign by the Chief Minister at Chintan Bhawan on September 17, 2024, aimed at mobilizing citizens to actively participate in environmental cleanliness for the state’s overall development.
Participants concluded the event with a pledge to integrate cleanliness into their daily lives, aiming to realize the vision of Swachh Bharat for future generations.
