1.5-Billion-Year-Old Fossil Found in Sikkim, Sparking Awe: CM Reveals Ambitious Vision for World-Class Fossil Park
Sikkim Discovers 1.5-Billion-Year-Old Stromatolite Fossil, Plans World-Class Fossil Park
Sikkim, Sept 20 – Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has lauded the groundbreaking discovery of a 1.5-billion-year-old stromatolite fossil at Fossil Park in Mamley, Namchi district. This remarkable find predates similar fossils uncovered in Canada, Australia, and the USA, underscoring its global significance.
Stromatolites, the oldest known fossils on Earth, predominantly formed by cyanobacteria, date back over three billion years. Highlighting the importance of this discovery, CM Tamang emphasized that these ancient structures were instrumental in shaping Earth’s early environment by contributing essential elements like oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen.
In a bid to promote and preserve this significant site, the Chief Minister announced plans to develop the area into a world-class fossil theme park under the Department of Mines & Geology. The envisioned park will feature an immersive light and sound show narrating Earth’s history, a geological museum displaying invaluable specimens, and exhibits of index fossils from around the globe.
Further enhancing the region’s scientific and tourism appeal, the development of a geopark village is also planned. This village will serve as a research hub for scientists, a learning center for scholars, and an engaging destination for tourists, thereby placing Sikkim on the global map for geology and paleontology.
This discovery not only highlights Sikkim’s rich geological heritage but also positions it as a crucial site for understanding Earth’s earliest life forms. With these initiatives, Sikkim is set to become an internationally recognized destination for geological and paleontological research, marking a significant milestone in the state’s scientific and cultural development.
