Manipur Govt’s Bold Move: Heartwarming Ban on Hunting and Trade of Amur Falcons – Northeast News
IMPHAL: The Manipur government has imposed an immediate ban on hunting, capturing, killing, and trading Amur falcons in Tamenglong district and its environs. In accordance with the directive, Tamenglong District Magistrate has instructed all residents to surrender their air guns to local village authorities, who will retain them until the end of November or until the falcons have completed their migration. Violators of this order will face legal consequences.
Amur falcons, locally referred to as ‘Akhoipuina’ or ‘Kahoipuina,’ migrate to Manipur, predominantly Tamenglong district and neighboring Nagaland, around mid-October from their breeding grounds in South Eastern Siberia and Northern China. These birds play a critical role in the local ecosystem. After spending about a month in Manipur, they continue their journey towards Southern and Eastern Africa before eventually returning to their breeding areas.
The Amur falcon is protected under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 and listed under Schedule IV. To aid in their conservation and study their migratory routes, a radio-tagging program was conducted in two phases in 2018 and 2019 in Tamenglong. This initiative aligns with India’s commitments under an international agreement targeting the conservation of migratory birds of prey.
Additionally, the Centre plans to establish 16 new Kendriya Police Kalyan Bhandars for civilians in Manipur, further contributing to the region’s development. The reinforced measures underscore the importance of preserving these vital raptors and ensuring sustainable coexistence within the region.
