Urgent Conservation: Manipur’s Bold Ban on Hunting Amur Falcons to Safeguard Migratory Birds
The Manipur government has announced an immediate and comprehensive ban on hunting, catching, killing, and selling Amur Falcons (Falco amurensis), commonly known as ‘Kahuaipuina.’ This directive, effective across the entire Tamenglong district and its surrounding areas, underscores the severe legal repercussions under sections 50 and 51 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, for anyone engaged in such activities.
To further bolster wildlife protection, the District Magistrate of Tamenglong has mandated a ban on all air guns, instructing residents to deposit these weapons with their respective Village Authorities. This measure coincides with the arrival of Amur Falcons to the district, typically from early October to the end of November—a vital period in their migratory cycle.
Village Authorities are entrusted with the safekeeping of these air guns until the birds depart or until November 30, 2024. The specific villages affected include Chiuluan, Khangchiuluan, Duigailong, Tamenglong Khunjao, Tamenglong town, Bamgaijang, Taobam, Namtiram 2, Nheng, Dikiuram, Konphung, Rianglong, Taijijang, Zeiladjang, Azuram, Thiulon, Vanchengphai, Akhui, Sangrungpang, Tabanglong, Keikao, Sempang, Duiluan, Matung, Puching, Phallong, Sonram, Dailong, Lenglong, Konphung, Dikiuram, Katang, Nheng, Ndai, Maruangpa, Namtiram, Namtiram-2, Nheng, Dikiuram, Konphung, Renglong, Guangram, Raengkhung, and Taobam, with the last three villages falling under Noney District.
Reports on the collection of air guns must be submitted to the District Magistrate’s office by September 30, 2024. Violations of these prohibitory orders will result in strict legal action.
This proactive step is part of the broader efforts to protect the Amur Falcons and ensure their safe migratory passage through the region, highlighting the government’s commitment to wildlife conservation.
