Iranian Supreme Leader Under Fire for ‘Minorities’ Remark: Critics Demand Accountability
International News Alert: Criticism of Ayatollah Khamenei’s Remarks on Muslim Suffering Sparks Reactions
New Delhi, Sep 17: Prominent Islamic scholars, diplomats, and politicians have sharply criticized Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei for his comments on the "suffering" of Muslims in Gaza, Myanmar, and India. In response, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) labeled Khamenei’s remarks as “misinformed and unacceptable,” advising countries to self-examine their human rights records before criticizing others.
Reuven Azar, Israel’s Ambassador to India, also condemned Khamenei, labeling him a “killer and oppressor” and emphasizing the freedoms enjoyed by Muslims in democratic nations like Israel and India, freedoms he argued are denied in Iran.
Several analysts accused Tehran of fostering regional instability, pointing to its support for Hezbollah and disruptive activities in Syria and Iraq. Mufti Wajahat Qasmi, a leading Islamic scholar, asserted that Indian Muslims are content, have chosen to remain in India post-independence, and urged Iran to cease seeking “cheap publicity.” He highlighted that terror incidents worldwide often involve Iran.
Agreeing with this sentiment, Mufti Shamoon Qasmi, Chairman of the Uttarakhand Madarsa Education Board, condemned Khamenei’s remarks as baseless and called on Tehran to grasp the actual situation on the ground. He lauded the Indian government for safeguarding the democratic and constitutional rights of Muslims.
However, Congress leader Rashid Alvi suggested that internal political dynamics contributed to Khamenei’s comments. He criticized the BJP for not reining in inflammatory statements from some leaders, which he believes tarnished India’s global image and prompted Khamenei’s remarks. Alvi dismissed claims that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s international statements influenced Khamenei, blaming BJP leaders instead.
The debate underscores the contentious nature of international commentary on domestic issues and the varied perspectives within India regarding the representation and treatment of its Muslim population.
