Mamata Meets Protesting Doctors; Announces Key Removals in Health and Police Departments
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee convened a crucial meeting on Monday, September 16, 2024, with the striking doctors. Following the discussions, she announced significant changes to meet the doctors’ demands. These changes include the removal of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal, the Deputy Commissioner of Kolkata Police, North, and two senior officials from the Health Department.
Ms. Banerjee stated, "We have agreed to remove the Director of Health Services and the Director of Medical College. Additionally, the Commissioner of Kolkata Police has decided to step aside pending an investigation." The Chief Minister emphasized that the talks were constructive and urged the doctors to resume their duties promptly.
In a gesture aimed at reconciliation, Ms. Banerjee assured that no punitive measures would be taken against those who participated in the recent protests. The move signals a significant step towards resolving the impasse between the state government and medical professionals, who have been demonstrating for weeks.
The announcements come in the wake of escalating tensions and indicate a concerted effort by the state administration to address the grievances of the medical fraternity.
