Joya Nandurdikar, 49, an interior designer and founding partner at Delhi-based Untitled Design Consultants, was inspired during her college years by architects Laurie Baker, Charles Correa, and B.V. Doshi. Drawn to sustainable design, she admired their use of materials and the nuanced, environmentally conscious work of Doshi.
Nandurdikar, recipient of awards like the ID Honours Award (2019), The D/List Award (2022), and IIID DRC Award (2023), champions sustainability in her projects. She frequently incorporates indigenous, eco-friendly materials and Indian arts and craftsmanship. “I love using rammed earth, lime-based products, clay, and paper mache in my designs,” she states.
Explaining her workspace, Nandurdikar describes two distinct studios: one for conceptualizing and brainstorming, and another for collaborating with artisans to bring ideas to life. Her workspace is a sanctuary filled with essential tools like measuring tapes, stationery, and personal photos. A cork wall serves as a canvas for her ideas and sketches.
Current trends in interior design that intrigue Nandurdikar include AI and automation, which enhance home user-friendliness. She emphasizes the importance of eco-friendly materials and believes that aesthetics should not compromise environmental concerns.
For inspiration, Nandurdikar looks to art galleries, installations, and historical design books. Among her favorite projects is a series of wall frescos incorporating various Indian crafts commissioned for the Serendipity Arts Festival.
When decorating her own space, Nandurdikar indulges in antiques, art, and plants, sourcing treasures from markets in India and abroad like Bali, Budapest, Paris, and Portugal.
