Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a rally in Haryana’s Kurukshetra, accused the Gandhi family of historically opposing reservations and disrespecting OBCs, Dalits, and Tribals. Modi claimed that former Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru believed government service quality would suffer if jobs were reserved for these communities.
Highlighting a letter Nehru wrote to state CMs against reservations, Modi alleged that subsequent Congress leaders, including Indira and Rajiv Gandhi, continued this stance, with Rajiv infamously calling reservation beneficiaries "Buddhu" in an interview. He charged the Congress with fostering anti-Dalit, anti-OBC, and anti-tribal sentiments and asserted that they plan to eliminate reservations if they regain power.
Modi criticized past Congress administrations in Haryana for uneven development, contrasting this with the BJP’s equitable efforts. He also accused the Congress of spreading falsehoods and causing anarchy, likening them to "urban Naxals."
Rahul Gandhi recently commented on reservations during a trip to the US, suggesting that the Congress would reconsider them once India becomes "fairer," advocating instead for a comprehensive caste census to address socio-economic disparities. His remarks triggered backlash from various political spheres, forcing Gandhi to clarify that he supports expanding reservations beyond the current 50% cap.
Polling for Haryana’s 90-member assembly is scheduled for October 5, with results expected on October 8.
