Central Team Reviews Nagaland’s Monsoon Devastation
Kohima, Sept 13: An Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) held a pivotal debriefing session at the Chief Secretary’s conference hall to assess the severe impact of landslides, flash floods, and floods that have battered Nagaland during this monsoon season.
The meeting featured Z Nyusietho Nyuthe, Advisor to the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), who underscored the state’s year-round struggle with natural calamities. Nyuthe pressed the IMCT to relay these persistent issues to the central government, advocating for stronger intervention measures.
Anant Kishore Saran, Joint Secretary (FFR) of the Ministry of Home Affairs, emphasized Nagaland’s geological vulnerability, which significantly heightens its exposure to natural disasters. Saran assured the state’s officials of immediate relief through central assistance schemes and pledged long-term solutions based on the team’s thorough evaluation.
During the session, Saran recommended revising the office memorandum concerning central assistance and urged heads of various departments to stay updated with the new guidelines. While acknowledging that not all affected areas could be visited, he noted that significant damage had been assessed, with road connectivity identified as a primary focus for relief efforts.
Key outcomes from the meeting include the enhancement of central assistance protocols and the prioritization of road repairs, significantly aiding in effectively managing future calamities in Nagaland.
This evaluation session reflects a concerted effort towards mitigating the effects of natural disasters in the state, underlining the necessity for robust central intervention and improved infrastructure resilience.
