Minister Defends Food Choice Freedom Amid Beef Row Controversy: A Bold Stance
Meghalaya Minister Opposes Nationwide Cow Slaughter Ban
Shillong: Meghalaya Cabinet Minister Comingone Ymbon has voiced his strong opposition to the national call for a ban on cow slaughter, emphasizing that dietary choices should not be dictated by external groups. Ymbon, who is in charge of Food and Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs, highlighted that India’s secular constitution safeguards the freedom of dietary preferences for its citizens.
Ymbon stressed that beef is a crucial part of the local cuisine in Meghalaya, a state with a significant Christian population. He warned that banning cow slaughter would have negative economic impacts, affecting not only food habits but also the livelihoods of cow breeders who depend on this trade.
“If cows are not sold, they will die and go to waste, which is not a viable solution,” Ymbon stated. He committed to bringing these concerns to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, ensuring that the traditions and economic practices of Meghalaya remain unaffected by external influences.
This statement comes as a direct response to the campaign led by Jagatguru Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwarananda Saraswati of Jyotirmath, who has been advocating against cow slaughter.
