Gujarat’s Health Department and police have identified 38 fake doctors during a 15-day statewide crackdown, with criminal cases already registered against 35 of them. The operation was carried out by 298 special teams drawn from the Health Department, police, Crime Branch and the Special Operations Group (SOG), according to national media reports.
The teams were deployed across districts including Surat and Rajkot, where they conducted sudden raids to trace unqualified practitioners. Rajkot accounted for the highest number of identifications, with 17 fake doctors, followed by nine in Surat, three in Gir Somnath, two in Surendranagar and one each in other districts. State Health Minister Prafulla Pansheriya released the figures.
Some fake doctors are believed to have learned about the operation in advance, shut their clinics and fled. Police and health officials are continuing searches for those who remain at large.
Pansheriya said the campaign against fake doctors will be intensified after the festive season ends. He said the government is committed to ensuring that no fake doctor can endanger the lives of ordinary people.
The minister urged citizens to use the free treatment, medicines and diagnostic services available at government hospitals and health centres. He warned that seeking care from people without adequate medical qualifications can cause serious harm to patients’ health and may even threaten their lives. Citizens who come across suspected fake doctors have been asked to inform the nearest police station, Primary Health Centre (PHC), Community Health Centre (CHC) or the SOG.
The Gujarat government has also decided to form special committees at the district level to help stop the fake doctor trade in the future, beyond the current enforcement drive. These committees will include taluka health officers, local police, health inspectors and village talati-cum-mantris. They will gather information in their areas, help identify fake doctors and assist the administration in taking action against them.
