Ghanakanta Gogoi, the main accused in the killing of five people at Guwahati’s Hotel Bilas Inn, died after a shootout with police in Phulpanichiga, Sivasagar. Police said he was critically wounded while trying to escape after taking a firearm from an officer, and died on the way to hospital. Sub-Inspector Debashish Sharma was also injured.
Sivasagar police were taking Gogoi from Guwahati Central Jail to Sivasagar police station for questioning in another case when the incident occurred, according to reports. Police said Gogoi seized Sharma’s pistol and fired at the team. Sharma was shot in the leg, and three bullets struck the police vehicle. Two hit its rear door and bumper.
Police said officers returned fire to control the situation and protect themselves. Gogoi was taken to hospital but died en route. Sivasagar’s superintendent of police said Sharma was in stable condition.
Security has been tightened in Phulpanichiga, and the area around the scene has been cordoned off. Senior officers are overseeing an investigation, while a forensic team has examined the site to establish the circumstances of the shooting.
