Urgent: Manipur Violence Inquiry Commission Granted Critical Extension Until November 2024 for Justice and Truth!
The Centre has extended the deadline for the Commission of Inquiry investigating the violence in Manipur till November 20, 2024. The inquiry, led by former Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Ajai Lamba, was initially set up on June 3, 2023, and was expected to conclude within six months of its first session. Alongside Lamba, the commission includes retired IAS officer Himanshu Shekhar Das and retired IPS officer Aloka Prabhakar.
This commission is tasked with probing the causes and spread of the violence and riots targeting various communities that erupted on May 3, 2023. The conflict has resulted in over 220 deaths and left many homeless, with significant property damage due to arson and looting.
The terms of reference for the commission include examining the sequence of events leading to the violence, identifying any lapses or failures by authorities, and assessing the adequacy of administrative measures taken to prevent and handle the situation. The commission will also review complaints and allegations from individuals and associations.
According to a notification dated June 4, 2023, from the Union Home Ministry, large-scale violence began on May 3, 2023, resulting in significant loss of life and injuries. The violence started following a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ organized in hill districts protesting the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. This led to ethnic clashes primarily between the Meiteis of the Imphal Valley and the Kuki-Zo groups from the adjoining hills.
The Government of Manipur recommended a judicial inquiry commission to investigate the crisis, leading the central government to appoint the current Commission of Inquiry under the Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1952. Manipur has continued to experience sporadic violence since the conflict began in May 2023.
