KSU Intensifies Pressure on Meghalaya Govt Over NEIGRIHMS Jobs, MRSSA
The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on October 26 met Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and pressed the state government to act on five pending demands, including recruitment concerns at NEIGRIHMS, delays in implementing the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), and issues concerning migrant workers.
KSU general secretary Reuben A. Najiar said the delegation urged the government to ensure its representation at the NEIGRIHMS Governing Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday, where it wants concerns raised over the 80:20 recruitment ratio and other employment-related issues at the Shillong-based institute. The Union had earlier withdrawn its agitation in 2025 following assurances of government intervention and discussions with the Union Health Ministry, Najiar said, adding that the KSU has also written to Shillong MP Saleng A. Sangma seeking his intervention in the matter.
The delegation also flagged delays in implementing the MRSSA, a law enacted in 2016 to address public safety and security concerns. According to Najiar, the Chief Minister assured the Union that the proposed facilitation centre at Umling would be taken forward, with an inspection expected soon.
The KSU further expressed concern over the lack of meetings by district task forces and delays in collecting residents’ data, which it considers essential for the effective implementation of the Act. The proposed public hearing concerning Shree Cement was also raised as part of the Union’s pending demands.
Najiar said the KSU would continue engaging with the state government to push for action on issues concerning employment opportunities for local residents, public safety, and the regulation of migrant workers.
