Ambition Needs Assistance: Closing the Access Gap in Ireland’s AI Pipeline

By Sanjeev Sarma
October 23, 2026 3 Min Read

The AI Future Will Not Be Built on Ambition Alone

We measure AI readiness in teraflops, model parameters, and GPU clusters. But the metric that actually matters is far simpler: how many girls walked into a computer science classroom today-and believed they belonged there.

The 2026 I Wish survey of over 2,300 Irish students found that just one in four girls in single-sex schools has access to computer science at Leaving Cert level. Meanwhile, 60 percent now cite lack of confidence as a barrier to pursuing STEM careers-up from 55 percent in 2025 and 50 percent the year before-even as demand for digital specialists in Ireland is projected to surge nearly 30 percent within four years. Women currently make up only one-fifth of that workforce.

The Architecture of Opportunity

What strikes me most, as an enterprise architect, is how precisely this mirrors a systems failure model. Any architect knows that system integrity depends on redundancy, and redundancy depends on diverse inputs. When a society systematically excludes half its population from the foundational layers of AI education, it is building a national technology stack with known structural vulnerabilities.

The confidence data is particularly telling. We treat confidence as an interpersonal soft skill, but in the talent pipeline, it functions as a rate-limiting factor-like a bottleneck in a distributed system. The capability exists, yet throughput never materializes. I have often argued in STPI mentoring sessions that ambition is like a poorly documented API: it can do remarkable things, but without the right interfaces-subject access, career guidance, visible role models-it never reaches production.

Caroline O’Driscoll’s phrase, “We ask girls to be ambitious, but ambition needs assistance,” is essentially a masterclass in systemic thinking. In my vocabulary: ambition is the product, but it requires an enabling environment. The “assistance” she speaks of-equitable subject access, school visits by accomplished women, clear career information-is not a nice-to-have feature set. It is core infrastructure.

The Northeast India Mirror

This is where the Irish findings hit close to home. In Northeast India, the challenge is amplified. We speak grandly about India’s AI mission and Digital Public Infrastructure, but the gender divide in our technical education and workforce remains stubbornly wide. Our girls face not only the confidence barrier documented in Ireland but also infrastructural, social, and geographic barriers that make classroom access itself a privilege.

If Ireland-with its robust education system and concentrated tech sector-is struggling to integrate girls into its AI pipeline, we in Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland cannot afford complacency. We need women in technology visiting schools in Tezpur, Imphal, and Itanagar just as urgently as I Wish brings them to Dublin. We need our state technology committees, our startups, our engineering colleges to ask the same hard question: who gets to touch the foundational technologies of our future, and who gets left behind?

What This Demands of Leaders

For CTOs, founders, and policymakers, the takeaways are direct:

  • Access to STEM subjects is not a curriculum footnote; it is the foundational layer of any national or regional AI strategy. Without it, everything upstream is built on a fragile stack.
  • Confidence is enabling infrastructure. It must be designed for-through mentorship, hands-on experience, and psychological safety-not assumed into existence.
  • Role models are the demonstration layer. Young women need to see the path before they can traverse it.
  • And for every enterprise leader: examine your own talent funnel. Are you actively building on-ramps, or are you passively benefiting from a system that excludes?

The most powerful algorithm in any economy is a girl who has seen what she could become-and believes the path is open to her. We can build all the AI infrastructure we want. But if we do not build equitable on-ramps, we are simply teaching our machines to replicate our biases at scale.
