India-China Face-Offs Continue Along Arunachal Border, Confirms ITBP Chief
Fresh confrontations have erupted between Indian security personnel and Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) troops at multiple locations along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Arunachal Pradesh, with some face-offs continuing since July, the chief of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has confirmed.
Speaking at the Himveer Samman Samaroah on Thursday, ITBP Director General Shatrujeet Kapur said Indian and Chinese troops had come face-to-face at several points along the disputed border in recent days, indicating that tensions in the region remain unresolved. “In the past few days, a situation arose where face-offs happened at several locations… and it still continues,” Kapur said.
The ITBP chief also referred to Chinese military deployments in forward areas along the border, stating that PLA personnel had established tents approximately 6 to 7 kilometres from India’s perception of the LAC, according to a report. The deployments were reported in areas including Asapfila and locations near Taksing in Arunachal Pradesh. In response, Indian forces have undertaken counter-deployments to safeguard their positions and prevent further encroachment, Kapur indicated.
His comments come over a month after India and China held talks amid reports of tensions in the Taksing area. On September 6, Corps Commander-level talks were held at the Wacha-Damai border meeting point on the Indian side to address ongoing issues along the LAC in the region.
Crediting the force’s newly raised Shaurya commandos for their role during the recent confrontations, Kapur said, “Our newly raised Shaurya commandos played an exemplary role in this. ITBP was raised as a mountain guerilla force and we were given border guarding duty along China in 2004.”
He added that the force would retain its original mandate while building specialised capability. “We need not leave our original function, and a specialised high altitude mountain fighting force is being set up, distinct than the army. We will soon have one full battalion of Shaurya commandos; high-altitude [deployment] is our strength,” he said.
The ITBP chief also stressed the growing significance of drones in contemporary warfare, pointing to China’s substantial investments in military modernisation. He noted that drones could enable smaller countries to challenge larger military powers, citing the conflicts involving Russia and Ukraine, and Iran and the United States, as examples.
The latest face-offs underscore the persistent friction along the poorly demarcated LAC in the eastern sector, even as diplomatic and military-level dialogue between the two sides continues to address longstanding disagreements along the contested frontier.
