Kharge Blasts Modi, Shah Over Manipur Unrest, Slams BJP Politics
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led government, accusing it of failing to restore lasting peace in Manipur amid renewed violence that reportedly claimed the lives of four civilians, and demanded answers from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on their handling of the ethnic conflict that has ravaged the northeastern state since May 2023.
In a strongly worded statement, the veteran leader said the latest killings highlighted the government’s failure to protect lives and bring normalcy back to the state. Expressing condolences to the families of the deceased, he also raised concerns over the conditions of thousands of people sheltering in relief camps.
In a post on X, Kharge said more than 300 people have died and 24,530 remain displaced since the conflict erupted in May 2023, with many living in relief camps under what he described as “pathetic conditions.”
“Manipur is bleeding again because of BJP’s incompetence! The horrific killing of four innocent civilians in the latest spate of violence is deeply condemnable. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families,” Kharge wrote.
Targeting the BJP’s stewardship of the crisis-hit state, the Congress chief argued that the imposition of President’s Rule, the replacement of the chief minister and the subsequent return of a BJP-led government had done little to end the unrest. He also criticised Modi for not visiting Manipur for nearly 29 months after the violence began, alleging that the Prime Minister had failed to fulfil his assurance of restoring normalcy.
Kharge sought answers from Modi and Shah on three key issues concerning the handling of the crisis. First, he questioned the status of the Peace Committee constituted by Shah in June 2023 and sought details of the concrete measures taken to restore peace, protect civilians and address security concerns in the state. Second, he asked what action had been taken on the recommendations of the Supreme Court-appointed Justice Gita Mittal Committee, questioning why thousands of people remained displaced and citing the apex court’s reported concerns over 31 unnatural deaths in relief camps. Third, he asserted that President’s Rule and the subsequent changes in the state government had failed to deliver a durable peace.
Reiterating that Manipur deserved justice, dignity, constitutional protection and a lasting peace settlement, Kharge cautioned that the security and stability of the border state should not be compromised by political considerations.
