Pasighat Durga Puja Sparks Drug Awareness, Wildlife Protection Drive
Durga Puja celebrations commenced in Pasighat, the headquarters of Arunachal Pradesh’s East Siang district, on October 17, with ornately decorated and illuminated pandals drawing devotees for prayers and festivities. Among the celebrations across the town, the Durga Puja Committee at GTC Children’s Park marked its third year with a theme centred on drug awareness, forest and wildlife conservation, and promoting a pollution-free environment.
Led by Tagom Padung, Chief Councillor of the Pasighat Municipal Council, the committee integrated public awareness messages into the festivities, particularly highlighting the dangers of drug addiction among young people alongside appeals to safeguard forests and wildlife. The celebrations also featured cultural competitions with participation from diverse communities, tribes and regions, enriching the town’s festive atmosphere.
Pasighat East MLA Tapi Darang attended the event as the chief guest alongside his wife. Padma Shri awardee Yanung Jamoh Lego served as the guest of honour and also performed the puja rituals. Deputy Chief Councillor Kamin Lego and Pasighat Market Councillor Rahul Tamuk accompanied the MLA during the event.
According to the committee, the annual celebration is organised at the Gram Sevika Training Centre located within Pasighat Children’s Park. Each year, the organisers choose a different theme, combining religious observances with meaningful messages on social and environmental issues, ensuring that the Durga Puja festivities not only bring the community together in worship but also inspire collective action on pressing local concerns.
This year’s focus on drug awareness comes at a critical time, as communities across the region grapple with rising substance abuse among youth. By pairing these important social messages with the grandeur of Durga Puja, the organisers aim to reach a wider audience and foster a sense of shared responsibility. The vibrant pandals and lively cultural programmes served as a backdrop for these crucial conversations, drawing residents and visitors alike into both celebration and reflection.
